Media coverage about the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo and its historic Hurricane Ivan evacuation played a major role in the TV series, The Little Zoo That Could. When Zoo Director Patti Hall was featured as a "Person of the Week" on World News Tonight with Peter Jennings a few days after the hurricane struck, documentary TV producer Julie Leifermann just happened to tune in. She was fascinated by this amazing story and by the courageous woman at the heart of it all and scribbled down some notes as a possible documentary idea for her production company. the volumes of media coverage this little zoo had received. Though the facility had been destroyed by the deadly hurricane, these heroic zookeepers had saved all their animals. Some of the stories about the ongoing struggles to rebuild the zoo were heartbreaking, but they could also be uplifting and humorous. Patti Hall was doing whatever it took to care for the animals, and to keep her team inspired during desperate times. They were still hopeful that somehow help would come. The magic wand was The Little Zoo That Could series, and as soon production began, the media coverage went into hyper-drive.
